Finding your North Star

The North Star is sometimes referred to as the center of the sky and is used to determine direction. In the energetic center of the body, the Hara, lies an acupoint that is also called the North Star. This point is used to find your direction in life.

The point nicknamed The North Star is Conception Vessel 3/Ren Mai 3. It lies on the midline of the lower abdomen just above the pubic bone. When the energy flows at this point, the three yin meridians that run from the feet to the abdomen (Liver, Kidneys and Spleen) can flow even better. This strengthens the yin energy and provides a solid physical and energetic foundation. It is a foundation for the larger energy center in the lower abdomen: the Hara tan-den (also called dantian or tantien). Important transformation processes of life force energy take place here, which in turn forms the basis for our emotional and spiritual well-being.

When the energy flows well at our acupressure-point The North Star, it is makes easier to get out of your head and connect with your body and life force energy. The peace you then feel can give you a completely different perspective on the situation you are in. In this way the North Star can help you to connect with yourself first, and then determine your direction in life.

Now how can you support the flow at this acupoint so that it can do its work for you? First of all, it is easy to understand that a point that helps you to center and connect with yourself needs attention at times when peace is lacking: with stress, unrest and, for example, the feeling that you have missed a turn in life.

The first thing to do when you're not feeling well is to take a deep breath - all the way to your lower abdomen - and exhale slowly. Repeat this several times. In this way you massage The Pole Star with your breath and improve the circulation in this area. You can also rub your hands warm and place them on your lower abdomen, or massage this area gently. Of course, Do-In and yoga also help. Choose exercises in which you alternately arch and round your spine. This improves the circulation at this acupoint.

The North Star is extremely powerful and gives a sense of space and freedom - from within.

NB The North Star came up in my conversation with Anne Simone Kensho for the online Summit Finding Your True North. In the coming weeks, various inspiring colleagues will talk about their insights in this area. Our talk will be broadcasted on September 25.
